AT&TAt&T announced yesterday that it is going to support auto-authentication for iPhone OS 3.0 users who connect to AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots. This will allow the seamless switch from AT&T’s 3G network to an AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spot, doing away with the previous two-step authentication, making it easier and faster for iPhone users to connect to AT&T Wi-Fi. The first time a user connects their iPhone to an AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spot is the first time the new auto-connect is established.

The rapid growth of Wi-Fi, propelled by the release of many new Wi-FI enabled gadgets, with more than 4 million connections made at AT&T’s U.S. Hot Spots with smartphones. And that was just in the first quarter of this year. The new auto-authentication is available starting today to all existing iPhone and iPhone 3G customers if they download the free iPhone OS 3.0 software update using iTunes. All iPhone 3G S customers will have access to it on June 19th, while for now, all iPhone customers can keep getting AT&T Wi-Fi access with the current authentication.
