Apple’s Lack of HDMI on iPhone 4: It’s iOS’s Fault

Apple’s odd choice to favor VGA over HDMI inside iPhone 4 leaves many scratching their heads. We’ll try to explain what happened, and why.

One announcement that Apple didn’t make at WWDC, was that iPhone 4 was compatible with the VGA adapter that Apple currently sells for iPad. With a maximum resolution of 1024×768, you might be asking, what the 720p?

And, it’s a fair question. Stores have pulled the old HD connection cables, and as we reported, iPhone 3GS was capable of playing HD video flawlessly. But, Apple is not out of the HDMI game, and no, they don’t expect you to buy an Apple TV as an apology on behalf of their omission.

Nokia Sues Apple Over Five Patents on the iPhone and iPad 3G

In the ongoing legal saga between Nokia and Apple, Nokia has fired the latest shot by filing suit against the manufacturer in Wisconsin Federal district court over five patents that the Finnish giant is alleging are being infringed with the iPhone and iPad 3G.

The patents in question relate to technologies for enhanced speech and data transmission, using positioning data in applications and innovations in antenna configurations that improve performance and save space, allowing smaller and more compact devices, according to the press release.

Apple has yet to officially respond to Nokia’s claims at this time.

LogMeIn Launches Beta Ignition Remote Access Application for Android

Remote access application developer LogMeIn has released a beta version of its Ignition remote access application for Android following up on the release of the iPhone version earlier this year.

The Ignition application allows remote access to computers and supports file sharing along with document editing. The application is available on the Android Marketplace for free.

Intel Announces Atom Z6 Series for Android and MeeGo

Intel has officially announced the forthcoming launch of the Atom Z6 series of processors intended for use in devices running MeeGo and Android based on its Moorestown smart device platform.

The processor line will be set at 1.5 GHz for mobile applications, while another application for tablets increases clockspeed up to 1.9 GHz, with no word on availability for manufacturer sampling or general availability at this time.

Palm Notifies Developers of Forthcoming webOS Update, PDK App Support Included

Palm has begun to notify app developers that the next webOS release candidate is forthcoming, with applications delveloped with the PDK plugin requested to be tested against the release to ensure app stability, as well as apps developed with other tools to ensure compatibility.

The above notification places Palm’s goal of adding PDK developed aplications to the App Catalog by the middle of the year inline with its timeframe, taking into account the recent purchase of the manufacturer by HP.

Nokia Releases Cross-Platform Qt SDK

Nokia has released its first version of the Qt SDK which is currently in beta. The SDK will allow developers to create and compile programs for Symbian 3.1 all the way up to Symbian^3, Maemo and MeeGo.

In terms of tool and API depth, the SDK is nearly complete with the Qt class library which includes GUI controls, WebKit integration, networking, database frameworks and more tools. C++ programmers can use the Qt Creator cross-platform IDE which includes a GUI layout and forms designer, project build management tools, debugging functions and code navigation tools for rapid development on any supported platform.
