The buzzword at CES this year is 3D.

3D displays to be exact, and it should come as no surprise that many different companies are looking to cash in on the recent phenomenon brought into prominence with the astounding success of Jame’s Cameron’s technological opus known as Avatar as well as the recent success of films shot in IMAX such as The Dark Knight and Harry Potter.

To that end, Sony Corp of America, IMAX and Discovery Communications have signed a letter of intent before CES to jointly launch a network dedicated to programming shot in 3D in 2012 as a way to get people to purchase capable displays.

Not to be outdone, venerable sports broadcast network ESPN has announced its own plans to launch its own network in ESPN 3D with the goal of broadcassting 85 live events in the new format as a minimum during its first year, which begins in June.
