Facebook Unleashes Usernames Smoothly

Unlike last night’s Twitter Fiasco (which may have been partially caused by this event), the Facebook update of allowing users to choose a username by which they can give their Facebook pages to friends and family through simple URLs, went very smoothly.

Despite all the hype, Facebook notices, and heavy Twitter traffic of people announcing their new names, about 200,000 usernames were created within the first three minutes with only a minor decrease in how face pages loaded.

The first night was definitely the biggest step in this transition. Since it went smoothly, Facebook workers will have ample resources and time to deal with problems that come with reserving names, copyright infringements and general increased site traffic.

This new feature of Facebook finally comes after it has already been used by such social networks as MySpace. It will greatly ease the way in which people can share Facebook pages with shorter and hopefully easy to remember URLs.
