iPod touch 2G Jailbreaks Are Out, We’re Telling You To Avoid Them

While many web sites over the past 48 hours have covered the recent development of a full, user-installable iPod touch 2G jailbreak… we haven’t. This is because MechaWorks has a long-standing policy to verify and test all iPhone and iPod touch modifications before reporting on them. Unlike other, less reliable news sources, we test each and every modification to ensure it is safe, before reporting on it.

And, unfortunately, we are going to have to suggest that you avoid the iPod touch 2G jailbreak at this time. We have found it to be very unstable, and have received reports of it bricking iPod touch 2G units. We have confirmed this with an iPod touch 2G in-house, using the Windows version of the jailbreak procedure.

We verified that the steps were followed properly when testing this unit, it appears that the jailbreak exploit is less stable from a technical standpoint. The latest iPod touch 2G jailbreak breakthrough takes advantage of a buffer overrun in the lower part of the iPod touch firmware. In other words, it’s a very precarious modification that is still being refined.

We will continue to test and update future, and upcoming revisions to the iPod touch 2G jailbreak. We are aware of multiple improvements that are already in-the-works. As such, we cannot stress enough that the current iPod touch 2G jailbreak can permanently brick an iPod touch, and we suggest avoiding the process completely at this time.

man, i’m glad i waited! (although honestly I’m not really seeing the advantages of doing this to an iPod Touch).

Well, for starters the iPod touch 2G makes for an excellent portable game console. With a built-in speaker, it can handle emaulators on-par with iPhone.

In fact, the newest iPod touch has a faster CPU than even the iPhone 3G, making it popular amongst developers and hackers.

Of course, Apple’s anti-competitive business practices ban emulators from the App Store, except under the narrowest (and most profitable) conditions. Hence, the large demand for an iPod touch 2G jailbreak.

[...] Oh, and one final thing. Don’t jailbreak your iPod touch 2G yet. It can have bad consequences. [...]
