Microsoft Announces First Year-Over-Year Profit Decline

For the first time in Microsoft’s history a fiscal year sales decline has occurred, and it’s hard to solely blame the economy on this one. For the fiscal year ending on June 30, only $58.44 billion in revenue was generated while $60.42 billion in revenue was generated in the 2008 fiscal year with Microsoft seeing a 3.2% decline in sales since going public.
Net profit fell 17% from $17.68 billion in 2008 to $13.1 billion with a 17% decrease in profits and sales in the 4th quarter of 2008 from $15.84 billion to $13.1 billion.
Chris Liddell, Chief Financial Officer of Microsoft, had this to say:
“Our business continued to be negatively impacted by weakness in the global PC and server markets. In light of that environment, it was an excellent achievement to deliver over $750 million of operational savings compared to the prior year quarter.”
