Ubuntu 8.04 & Eee PC

Ubuntu is my preferred Linux distribution. So, with Ubuntu 8.04 out, I decided to give it a try on my Eee PC.

There is one really nice feature with Ubuntu 8.04. It has a new method of installing that creates an image file in Windows. Then, it edits the Windows boot menu to add Ubuntu as a startup item. This means you can put Ubuntu on your SD memory card, and remove/replace it at-will.

Alas, while Ubuntu boots fully on the Eee PC… Wi-Fi doesn’t work. The hardware loads with a proprietary driver properly. It’s identified as the right AR5007 card. But, Ubuntu’s Wi-Fi framework never shows up to the party.

And that, is a deal-breaker.
