Verizon Wireless Announcements Galore

Not to be outdone by AT&T’s recent upgrade, Verizon Wireless had plenty of news for us today. The first and probably most interesting announcement was from CEO Lowell McAdam, who announced today that we will see the Palm Pre on Verizon’s nationwide network with in the next six months.
This confirms that Sprint’s exclusive period with the new device will be very short. In addition, he also confirmed that we can expect a next generation Blackberry Storm in the same time period. That’s two bombshells that boost VZW and Palm’s standing, while hurting Spring slightly. While we all expected a new Storm sometime soon, the news that Palm Pre will be sold for VZW is surprising.
McAdam also told reporters that VZW will soon be selling phones that use the Android operating system from Google, with Motorola noted as a “major” player for the second half of this year. So you can expect to see those Android devices popping up pretty soon. Verizon is at the same time working on implementing its LTE upgrade that AT&T is also working on. The numbers given were 210 markets by 2012.
This is a lot of big news at one time from Verizon, which is further solidifying its reputation as a company with strong coverage. They also seem to be working on their biggest weak point: their poor phone selection. But with the Palm Pre soon being available along with a new (and hopefully improved) Blackberry 2, they may just move far beyond the competition.
