In a podcast from Zune Insider, Matt Akers, a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) at Microsoft confirmed rumors about the Zune HD being powered by Tegra, stating, “Well, we’re going to go ahead and confirm that. Yes, the Zune HD does have the Tegra chip in it.”

nVidia’s Tegra chip is derived from the ARM family and is designed to be used inside smartphones, MIDs and PDAs. Tegra is an all-in-one package that takes the CPU, GPU, Northbridge, Southbridge and primary memory and places it on a single silicon board. By design, Tegra fits all the specs needed to run the Zune HD.

To quickly recap main features on the Zune HD, it has:

  • 3.3″ OLED touch capacitive screen display (480 x 272 resolution)
  • Multi-touch technology
  • HD Radio receiver
  • Built-in accelerometer
  • 720p high definition video support and output (additional dock required)
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity (with Wi-Fi Zune Marketplace)
  • Web Browser
